There are certain story ideas that do better in a movie format and certain ideas that do better in a television series format. Personally, I’ve always thought a zombie story would do better in the TV format.

For the past 30 years, Hollywood has disagreed with me. On Oct. 31, however, “The Walking Dead” will premiere as Hollywood’s first attempt at a zombie TV series.

The show centers around Rick Grimes, a sheriff in a small town who is put in a coma after being shot, and when he awakens, the world has been turned upside down by zombies. He returns home to find his wife and child have left, and he sets out to find them.

The show is based on the critically acclaimed comic book series of the same name by Robert Kirkman. It will be adapted for TV by director Frank Darabont (“Shawshank Redemption” and “The Mist”). It will be broadcasted on AMC, which usually wouldn’t be a big deal except this is the same network that has given us “Breaking Bad” and “Mad Men.” This network knows good shows and has shown a lot of faith in this one.

Even though it starts exactly the same way as the extremely well done Danny Boyle zombie film, “28 Days Later,” the series has been constantly praised for its originality and Darabont has stated the series will look at zombies in a way that has yet to be done on screen.

Overall, if you like zombie films, probably a TV show to tune in to. It premieres Oct. 31 at 9 p.m. on AMC.
