Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare | Game DLC Review

One of my nondescript lady friends was recently watching me play through the “Undead Nightmare” DLC for the newest powerhouse offering from Rockstar Games, “Red Dead Redemption”, and she promptly exclaimed that a zombie apocalypse could never happen in the Old West era. I then asked her which time frame would be most convenient for the zombies, the truth set in, and then we shared a hearty laugh. Truth is, we are zombie lovers all-year-every-year; our culture’s been drooling over them for decades. Not until “RDR” has anyone had the gall to introduce them into an early 1900’s setting.

Good news, it works. Rockstar has absolutely packed as much zombie content as possible into this world for a quick and easy ten dollars. John Marston, the mangled-face outlaw with a surprisingly vast vernacular, starts this new 9ish-hour campaign after witnessing his wife and son become infected by his now-zombified elderly uncle. He ties them up in the master bedroom, assuming they’re merely suffering a wild fever, and heads off into town to find a cure.

The rest of the game is a lengthy trek to discover a cure for the ever-spreading zombie hoard that is terrorizing the cities of southern Texas and Mexico. The gameplay’s the same, but the aim of Marsten’s campaign is different, between the eyes to be exact. You roam across the country saving towns from the outbreak by riding through on your zombie horse blowing zombie heads off, men, women, and sasquatch. It can get repetitive, but the charm of the side missions, incredible scenery, and fantastic dialogue in the cut sequences make this a ride worth taking.
