Oklahoma Wins Big 12 Championship In Controversial “Extra Three Quarters”
Story by Christina Mayer
| Published Dec 7, 2010

The head referee at the Big 12 championship game has drawn intense dislike from Nebraska fans after he apparently allowed Oklahoma to do what Texas did in 2009 – snatch the championship victory straight out of Nebraska’s hands. In this year’s game, however, Oklahoma clinched a win in three quarters that were added back on after Nebraska attempted to give the game away.

“It was a really painful flashback for me,” Nebraska fan Jacob Rawley told this reporter through his tears. “I was at the game last year when Texas screwed us over, and now this. I hate the Big 12. This conference doesn’t coddle us nearly enough. All we wanted was to give them a final ‘screw you’ before we left, and they took it from us.”

Husker fans nearly rushed the field at the end of the first quarter, necessitating a mass herding effort to get everyone back in the stands. When calm was restored, it was announced that Nebraska would have to play the final three quarters, as well, which came as a shock to many fans. Oklahoma promptly scored 17 points to tie the game. The Sooners went on to score a further two field goals in the course of the game, while Nebraska scored one. The Huskers failed to score a single point in the second half.

Taylor Martinez, who played through ankle and foot injuries but still managed to take a heroic seven sacks on the evening, was careful not to blame the referees’ controversial call to make Nebraska play the entire game.

“It was surprising, to say the least. We thought we had it in the bag at the end of the first quarter, when we had that 17-0 lead. I really did. But our sloppy playing and inability to catch or hold on to the football while on offense probably did the most damage. You can’t blame our defeat entirely on the refs this year, which sucks. Having a scapegoat was really nice.”

Reporters did not bother to ask Tom Osborne, found sitting forlornly in the Lost Children booth, to comment on the last-three-quarters defeat. But Bob Stoops, head football coach for the Oklahoma Sooners, was happy to share his reaction to the game.

“It was nice meeting Nebraska one more time before they abandoned us to deal with Texas on our own. This rivalry has a good history, and it’s produced a lot of great games over the years. I think this controversy over the ‘extra three quarters’ is way over-blown, not that I would ever accuse Husker Nation of being a bunch of ungrateful whiners with too much spare time on their hands. So here’s hoping the Big Ten treats you well, and I pray that Ohio State totally curb stomps you next year.”

Y'all need a sense of humor! Yeah, losing sucks, but I look at this season as a success. For the first time in over a decade, we beat a team that finished the season in the AP Top 25....and we beat two of them! I for one think this article was abso-fucking-lootely funny!

That was very, very funny. I couldn't write that better myself. PS: Zack Lee would have won that game for us. It's not always about who has the best physical talent. Martinez was more worried about how he was going to look and his future transferring to another team. He fumbles more than anyone in the coutry and is not a team player. Zack Lee is the greatest example of a team player you'll ever see. He would have posed a passing threat thus opening up the run. He would have actually completed passing that werent' just slants. End of story. We won. Bo. Wake up!

Yes, we can laugh a little at our recent difficulties with the referees and the Big 12's obvious snit because we were leaving. But, on Saturday, I was screaming for Watson (or Bo) to give an obviously wounded and shaken Martinez the hook and bring in Cody Green or Zac Lee (is he healthy?). But coaches often have this stubborn and image- protecting thing about sticking with their decisions, lest someone later say that said decisions were absolutely bogus to begin with. My question is this: What good is Taylor Martinez on a gimpy pair of wheels? If he can't run like he was shot out of a cannon, he's nothing to fear. He became confused, frightened and incapable of dumping the ball off when subjected to a ferocious all-out rush that stemmed from Oklahoma's certain knowledge that he posed minimal threat as either a passer or runner. So, thanks to Taylor's ankle injury (and the fact that our receivers repeatedly failed to catch the ball against Texas), the season was lost. It's on to Washin

This is genuinely funny. Tough loss on Saturday, but that was the best called game we've had all year. A good game and a good way to end the rivalry, even if we didn't pull it off. Losing to OU hurts much less than losing to a Texas team.

My hats off to Oklahoma, it was a great game. It was just unfortunate for our Offensive Coordinator to AGAIN not adapt to a football game and change his gameplan accordingly. 20 points in first half, kudos to Shawn Watson, 0 in 2nd half shows that he was outcoached by OU. He didn't make any changes. Then when we get into field goal range to tie it, he calls a drop back pass with a guy notorious for not throwing the ball away, so we get a sack and no field goal attempt. Nice... Please Vanderbilt, offer Shawn Watson the job.

I'll admit first of all that I am a Husker fan. Secondly, I'm sure there are some that once again took this seriously. The Dailyer is a UNL published paper for spoof news. Take a joke. That being said, this article pretty much sums up the attitude of the entire country when looking at our program, especially our fanbase, this year. I would agree that we have received no favors from conference officials this year, but complaining about it only makes us look worse. WE, the team, lost to Oklahoma by 3 and gave up 4 turnovers 3 of which could have ended in at least a field goal. The article is just a summary of what "Husker fans" have sounded liked for the last half of the season. I think its time for us to look in the mirror, bite our tounge, support the team. We're acting like Mizzou and frankly fellow Husker fans, it's starting to get annoying.

Ok, now that's funny. I think the Huskers definitely beat themselves but they also played a good game. 4 turn overs should have ended the game with a blowout rather than a 3 point loss. I'm proud of these guys, they lost to Texas and Oklahoma by their own deeds. Dropped passes against Texas and dropped balls against OU. They were both great games and while the A&M game stung because I believe A&M didn't earn that win against us, to have a season where we had 3 losses by a combined 13 points is a great year. We have a team we can be proud of once again. Thanks for the great effort all season guys! You're fun to watch again.

It's supposed to be a humorous onion-esque article, yet some of you are still butthurt about 2009. WHAT do Nebraska fans have to bitch about this year? Every call went your way in this game, you just got flat out beat by a better team. And there's a huge difference between what happened at Oregon vs. what happened to Nebraska last year. Last year was the correct call, no matter how much Nebraska fans hate to admit it. Oregon was blatant cheating by a replay official that happened twice.

"Sucking the texas teat" lol. OU has owned that team the past decade, and it will only continue. OU has owned the conference by winning its division (MUCH more competitive than the north) 8 times, and winning the conference title 7. OU has also gotten to play in more national championships than anyone, so if that is "sucking the Texas teat" then I think I'll just be happy continuing to do so as we win more conference titles, and go play for more national titles. It's not that we weren't "able to stand on our own" it's that we aren't cowards that are leaving because they couldn't compete. Hell, you lost in Lincoln to the worst Texas team in 54 years. ISU, Baylor and K-state all beat them. Enjoy the Big 10, you whining, sniveling cowards.

I mean, really, if your kid sucked at his job, and everyone knew it, wouldn't you feel bad for him? But come to think of it, he never could do a damn thing right.... sucked at every job he ever had. OK, can we load up the truck and move to Vandy?? Someone get him out of town!!!!

@gbr IQ28, Win Little 10 Championship? 1. You haven't won anything in what, 15 years? 2. As pathetic as Little 10 is, Neb won't beat out OSU, Iowa, or Michigan. The days of playing in Minor League North are over.

Huskers, can we get a re-match. We would like to have that 1st quarter back. Sincerly, the Tigers.

As an OU alum I have spent my entire adult life rooting for NU when OU wasn't in the picture or involved. I'm not a Puritan or Blueblood but am diappointed in NU fans recently and think their behavior directly reflects the behavior of their coach who I used to admire. In the past I would consistently tell people here in the east of the dignity and character of the NU program and its fans. What a disappointment you have become. Bring back Dr. Tom, now that was class, at the highest level. I still wish you success but some of your new generation needs to get their heads screwed on straight. This aricle was funny and anyone who thinks differently probably doesn't enjoy the lighter side of life in other ways. You know, the things that leave you with lines of pleasure etched in your face as you get older, not lines of torment, anger, and unhappiness. Just sying! I hope you take the Big ?? by storm. Your fan base of yesteryear deserve that. If your arrogance, nasty behavior, and whining c

Noobraska fans classy? Hilarious. That myth ranks up there with Yeti myth. NU fans suck. The proof is in the Noob posts on this page.

I guess you may want to add a facebook icon to your blog. Just marked down this site, although I must make it by hand. Just my advice.
