Nebraskans ‘Totally Fine’ With Mexican Quarterbacks
Story by Alex Wunrow
| Published Sep 21, 2010

Racial tensions in the state of Nebraska have been high since Fremont, Neb., voters passed a harsh anti-undocumented immigrant measure intended to keep paperless immigrants from working or owning property within the city of Fremont. But that hasn’t tampered the enthusiasm the entire state has for the emergence of Mexican-American quarterback Taylor Martinez.

Since his surfacing as the Huskers starting quarterback, Martinez has proven that Nebraskans are still fully capable of supporting non-white QBs.

The overwhelming support for Martinez mirrors that of similar minority Husker stars such as Turner Gill, who committed to come to Nebraska despite rumors that the Huskers were reluctant to start an African-American at quarterback.

Those fears were put to rest after Athletic Director Tom Osborne stayed true to his word and chose the best player for his team, regardless of race. And the move paid huge dividends to the Husker athletic program, as Gill never lost a game within what was then the Big 8.

But much like Gill, Martinez is being hailed as the next great Husker running quarterback, cementing Nebraska’s status as a place where minorities are welcome to come participate in athletics.

“We want people to know that true Nebraskans will not judge you by the color of your skin,” Osborne said, “so long as you can seriously ball.”

Osborne’s words resonated with Nebraskans, many of whom supported the Fremont measure.

“People just don’t understand. We don’t hate all Mexicans,” Fremont resident Earl Sweeney said. “It’s just all the lazy ones that live here that I utterly detest.”

Despite the animosity held for most “regular” Mexicans throughout Nebraska, most residents simply do not understand why people would care what color skin their athletes don.

“In Nebraska we care about three things,” sophomore Andy Barnes said, “Husker football, drinking and fair tax. You tell me where hating Mexican athletes fits in there.”

We seem to going back to the old days when I couldn't go through the front door of a restaurant or cafe. when we mexicans were looked upon as non-human. I really thought the anglos were starting to smart up, but retardation seems to be controlling their attitudes toward minorities since the nineties. I have really tried, all my life to be color blind when it comes to race relations, and I was hurt many a time, my father told me many times hang in there son things will get better. and for awhile it seem to be working after the civil rights act, but since the turn of the century we seem to be going backwards. I survived three tours in Viet Nam for my country the USA . Like George Lopez says, we're not going anywhere. By the way Fremont, Ne. is the Ku Klux klan capital of Nebraska.

I'm glad that even though theirs not a lot of Mexican-American or Latinos in College Football the few that are their are for the most part super-stars in their teams! Hopefully sports can be a way to unite America! I was in the Marines for 5 1/2 years and when I would meet white people mostly from the mid-west or the south at first they were racist towards Hispanics but once we got to know each other we would all become good friends! For the most part... So hopefully one day we would all get along! I doubt it but I hope it happens! P.S. That's why I won't ever leave Texas! Because we run things down here! Lol! J/K Can we all just get along? Lol!

One problem, Taylor Martinez ISN"T MEXICAN. Why do you idiots assume someone is Mexican just because they have a Spanish surname. Here is a quote, FROM AN INTERVIEW WITH HIS DAD "'I preferred the knockout shot as opposed to the interception,' says Casey Martinez, who despite his surname is not Hispanic. Casey was adopted and his surname comes from his motherâ

You guys need to get your facts right. His father was adopted and his mom, Edifania, is Somoan. You guys need to get your facts right before you right anything, especially this.

Edifania is his STEP mother. His real mother is white, but left them and is a scumbag. Edifania is Samoan, Taylor got a tatoo in her honor. Taylor's dad said he is German, Irish, French

He may not be Latino but he has the name and that's what give him his strength and motivation. People still judge him because of his name. Whites thinks he's mexican and Latino's don't really care. We got our own stuff to worry about.

Martinez is a great and honorable last name, in Nebraska or any part of this planet. We have to look beyond skin color for us to move forward together. America the great melting pot! God bless America!

Irrespective of Martinez's race and upbringing, he's a good QB, but my issue is that it's still a major problem with the way Latinos in general, and Mexicans in particular are perceived in the midwest and in my own country in general. This is a country that I love and for which I served a tour in the military. This is the 21st century! We work so hard and contribute and would die for this nation. We should not generalize about people and their of color skin, only because it's different from your own...

Is this an University of Nebraska supported wed-site? Your title is both IDIOTA and racist, the content and some of the quotes are something that may be found in a 1950 newspaper in the south, and in many of the comments you used - nationality- as if you were talking about a breed of dogs or cats. shameful article son hope you not going to do this for a living. Taylor Martinez is not Latino-Hispanic, he is white, the name Martinez is an european name from Spain, Spaniards conquered America and set their names to the native americans in Lati-america, but the name is "white" there are africans, europeans, indians, even asians using that name, Taylor is not Mexican at all. Martinez is a common name in France too, due to the proximity with Spain, check in internet freanch names like didier with martinez and see there ae white people not latino using that. Taylor backgrounds are German, French, Irish zero mexican and latino, check olivier martinez the french sex symbol, he is white, called the new alain delon, spaniards names are not only for latino americans, spaniards set during the conquest of America.

There are a lot of French people with Martinez as a last name in France, yes, maybe because is next to France, and also in Quebec and they are whites, the name is From Spain, an European country, the fact Spanish names are also "Latino" is just cause the Spaniards conquered America and set their naming customs to the Indians there, like English set their naming customs to African Americans, Taylor is white, cause there are a lot of whites with Spanirds names cause originally those are white names, like Andy Garcia, Mel Ferrer, Emilio Etevez, Cameron Diaz, Tony Azevedo etc.

Alex Wunrow is a stupid ignorant, please don't let him write anything again! he is racist against Mexicans, and also important, what is Taylor Martinez ethnicity doing here? Martinez is NOT MEXICAN, is not Latino, is not Hispanic, yes thee are white people with that name too, is like "MARTIN" there are Afro-Americans, Latinos, white English, Jewish with that last name! MARTINEZ the same as well other former colonial powers in America last names are used by a large group of different ethnicities, and agree, who cares that? if he has a muslin name, spanish, english, irish or if he is asian or white or whatever dude, he is one of the greatest QBs now, stop writing racist articles and please read history of America and Mexico etc. you are a waste of a life
