Nebraska Fans Hold Candlelight Vigil For Victims Of Chattanooga Game
Story by Jacob Fricke
| Published Sep 6, 2011

Fans of the Nebraska Cornhuskers congregated outside Memorial Stadium late Sunday evening for what was the first day of a long candlelight vigil in memory of the victims of the Husker’s 40-7 victory.

Following the athletic slaughter, seventeen visiting fans from the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga Mockingbirds were rushed to the hospital with embarrassment-related injuries. None are expected to survive.

The damage suffered by fans, however, was not the reason for the vigil. The entire Chattanooga offense, its starting defensive line, and several assistant coaches suffered life-threatening injuries following their contact with Division I football players.

Nebraska defensive end Cameron Meredith was particularly effective, slaughtering three receivers, two tight ends, and the starting right guard.

The rest of the injured players and coaches were hospitalized by the particularly vicious and spiteful play calling of new offensive coordinator Tim Beck.

Beck later explained his reasoning. “Though some may think calling ‘Slaughter-Murder-Death 29’ right off the bat was a bit much, we wanted those junior college kids to know we were serious,” he said after the game. “And if their offense can’t handle [Husker defensive coordinator Carl] Pelini’s ‘All-Blitz-Crush-Kill’ formation, then they should get off the damn field.”

While the estimated 10,000 fans that surrounded Memorial Stadium sang hymns and prayed to Nebraska Athletic Director Tom Osborne, coach Bo Pelini faced questions and criticism from those who felt his team overcompensated.

Pelini was defiant in his response to critics. “They’re 21st in the Division II rankings, so I wasn’t about to take them lightly,” Pelini said. “You never want to underestimate a team that could, at any point, call in a real quarterback or insert a offensive lineman that weights more than 120 pounds. We don’t half-ass things here, and we didn’t think they would, either.”

The vigil is expected to continue until next week’s game, when the Southern Kentucky Girl’s School for the Blind will come to Lincoln to be slaughtered like sheep.

I agree with the previous posts. This article runs completely contrary to what NU football is about; things like applauding the opponents' effort (win or lose) after the game. I now live on the East Coast and I'm always bragging to my buddies about Nebraska's great sportsmanship. This is an embarassment and should never have found its way onto the Huskerpedia website.

I have to agree with the majority on this one....not cool...or funny really! I'm glad we won but we were supposed to and the reality is, we didn't look that great doing it either. However, that's not that surprising considering it's the first game with a new offense. The offense should look better and better each week...hopefully. The defense, although already very very good, will also get better and better each week. Jacob, don't quit your day job and for the love of God, please don't tell us this is your day job!

Verbally abusing a college student is not the best way to prove how classy Nebraska fans are. Also, this is not the DN. As the header on the website clearly states if you bother to look, it is the DailyER Nebraskan, a satire paper at which students are not paid to write. Calm down and take a joke.

Isn't this article to making fun of the fact that NE takes football so seriously it feels compelled to scehdule games against FBS teams for 1/3 of the season? Answer: pretty sure yes. Chattanooga played their hardest and jacob never says otherwise. this article is making fun of NE, not TN.

You make yourself look even more less intelligent for not even using the correct facts in the article. Chattanooga is a FCS football team, which is still a Divison 1 (ONE) program, used to be called 1-AA. An FCS program is NOT a Divison 2 or a Ju-Co program whatsoever. As a Husker fan, I'm embarassed to see such an article.

It seems gbr (post 29) is the only one who 'got' the joke. THIS ARTICLE IS MAKING FUN ON NEBRASKA not Chattanooga!! For scheduling such poor competition in their non-conference schedule. NU takes football so seriously, but then they schedule weak teams such as "Southern Kentucky Girl's School for the Blind." However, this article would be funnier if it was written about a team that we actually did embarrass. The fact is we played poor sloppy football week 1, and even though we were never in any danger of losing, Chattanooga has nothing to be ashamed of. Unlike most of you MORONS, I get the point he was trying to make, but the article really doesn't make much sense in the context of this game.
