Happy Body Slow Brain - Dreams Of Water Review
Story by Jacob Fricke

“Dreams of Water,” the debut album by Happy Body Slow Brain, is a masterful release that defies easy classification. It is simultaneously both progressive and a throwback to simpler times. It is aggressive and passive. It breaks new ground, while staying firmly rooted in tradition.

The phrase “melting pot” is apt when describing the album’s sound. A combination of saccharine pop, progressive rock and 1980s new wave, the album floats through its’ 13 songs effortlessly.

The band is led by former Taking Back Sunday guitarists Matthew Fazzi and Isaac Bolivar. Most impressive, however, is the contributions of drummer Eduardo Torres. Seemingly a master percussionist, his drumming meshes essential timekeeping with a Spanish-influenced drum sound in a way I hadn’t thought possible.

Bolivar provides ambient keyboards and subdued guitar in a way that perfectly syncs with Fazzi’s voice. Vocals are treated as an instrument, never overpowering the guitar or subtle bass.

Lyrically, the band covers familiar ground. Themes of lost love, insecurity in oneself and the promise of a better future pervade the album. While the subject matter isn’t particularly creative, it never needs to be. The lyrics are clever, and are sung in a way that fits perfectly with the music.

Essentially, “Dreams of Water” is one of the best albums of the year. Listeners tired of bands more about promotion than music will instantly fall in love.
