OH SHIT!
Before things get out of hand, let me clear up a few things:
1. The DailyER Nebraskan, often referred to as both The DailyER and The DerN, is a bi-weekly (every two weeks) satirical news publication that has been printing since February 2008.
2. We do not print during the summer months. Newspapers are dying. So is reading. If students don’t read during the school year, who’s reading in July?
3. The Journal-Star, I believe, was referring to our spring semester hiatus of 2009. We were not too stoned to print last semester (save for our editorial staff); we simply had some organization and financial issues to work out. Consider them worked out.
And now we’re back. Unlike the Chicago Tribune, Seattle Post-Intelligencer, hundreds of college publications and pages 9-12 of the DN, the DailyER Nebraskan is still alive! The University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s first and only satirical student newspaper has shredded the bureaucratic rulebook and swindled a year’s worth of student fees.
We also made a number of essential changes during the spring and summer months that will (hopefully) ensure the longevity and accessibility of the DailyER. For starters, the DailyER Nebraskan is now online, just 17 years after the birth of the World Wide Web. Now that’s punctuality! Please visit us online at www.dailyernebraskan.com.
You may also have noticed the size and format of our paper changed. Thanks to a dedicated layout and design staff (and Microsoft Office Publisher 98!), our paper has never looked cleaner.
As for longevity, the DailyER now hosts “DailyER Nebraskan Presents…” a monthly music showcase at Lincoln’s very own Bourbon Theatre. Enjoy our publication but hate publicly supporting us? Spend that money on the other dying industry and join us for some live tunes! Depending on how many friends you bring with you, you can simultaneously (and anonymously) support both the DailyER and Lincoln’s best concert venue. Start this Thursday, Sept. 10 at 9 pm with New Jersey’s Titus Andronicus and Brooklyn’s The So So Glos.
So perhaps our history does suggest that we’re sometimes published. Touché, J-Star. Touché. But those days are over. We’re now financially secure (for one year only), aesthetically pleasing and Internet friendly! We shall no longer need a spring hiatus. Ever. Those are for patsies. We’re not patsies.
Oh! And hey, freshman. Welcome to UNL. It’s the Harvard of the Plains, you know. So don’t mess this up. Read the Lincoln Journal Star’s “Campus Guide” for more information on how to fit in.
And now, of course, I’m obligated as editor to say this issue has a lot to offer. And it does. Check out the in-depth, exclusive interview conducted by our very own Adam Templeton with 16-time Emmy-nominated comedy writer Bill Scheft. Not only has Scheft been writing for David Letterman’s “Late Show” since 1991, but he’s also a friend of Larry David. We could not get Larry David. Sorry. (See “The Rice & Wrongs”).
We’re also especially pleased to feature a guest column by our friend Joe Garden, features editor of The Onion and author/co-author of several books including “The Dangerous Book for Dogs” and “The New Vampire’s Handbook,” which went on sale today.
But our priority here at the DailyER is not to interview celebrities or play publicist for touring musicians. Our priority is the news, and the news these last two weeks has been riveting. We’ve covered it all. Stay connected. Read the papER.
Enjoy.
Respectfully-er,
Carson Vaughan
