Fans of the men’s Olympic cross-country sprint witnessed history on Monday. Russian Nikita Kruikov smashed all records for the event, finishing the course in only a quarter of the time it took the second place finisher after discovering a very large hill.

“It was an extremely odd feeling,” Kruikov said after the race. “It was like I was falling but I was still on the ground.”

According to Kruikov, he kept swinging his poles, but they weren’t speeding him up, so he tucked them in. That decision would bring him and his country worldwide recognition.

“I feel amazing,” he added. “I never dreamed skiing and falling could be combined.”

Alexander Panzhinskiy, another Russian, finished the 1.6-kilometer course in second place with a time of 3 minutes, 36 seconds. Kruikov’s time was 53 seconds.

Kruikov plans to participate in the 2014 games; he’ll spend the next four years resting his arms.
