Best Of Summer Movies
Story by Greg Bright

Having too much fun this summer to head to the movies? Well don’t worry, I wasn’t, so I saw almost every film that came out, most were forgettable -- “Salt”, “A-team.” Some were awful -- “The Other Guys”, “Shrek 4.” But there are a few I feel you should go back and see. Here they are in no particular order:

"Please Give” -- A beautifully poetic dry comedy from one of the most underrated directors, Nicole Holofcener. Her characters are so real, you feel that you already know them. No one understands and creates complex women as tenderly as Holofcener does. And the ‘happy’ ending is as haunting as “Blue Velvet.”

“Toy Story 3” -- I know most of you have already seen this but I have to point it out. The movie is as emotionally complex as any adult drama out there, and more complex than most. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a film deal with abandonment as well as this film did. And Micheal Keaton can not get enough praise for his neurotic, yet lovable turn as Ken. Just mark it up as another masterpiece from Pixar.

“Winter’s Bone” -- The best performance of the summer goes to Jennifer Lawrence as the main character of this story. This is really a mystery film told through the eyes of a young girl trying to protect her family. It is funny, tragic, chilling, and hopeful. Every year there is an indie film that the Academy decides to love on, and this film will rightfully be that film.

“Inception” -- If you haven’t seen it, you definitely didn't go to the movies at all this summer. Best edited movie I’ve seen in a while and the ‘second dream’ sequence is Stanley Kubrick good.

“Scott Pilgrim vs the World” -- Hilarious, fast-paced and witty. This is a movie made for the Adult Swim crowd and somehow Edgar Wright pulls it off for nearly two hours. Personally, my favorite part was the reunion of George Micheal (Cera) and Anne (Mae Whitman) from Arrested Development, but maybe I’m just a superfan.
