If you were one of the 12 million participants in the “Battlefield 3” beta, you can already attest to the fact that EA DICE has surely created their “next-gen shooter”. And if you happened to be one of the free beta testers, you must already know that BF3 has its sights set on the monolithic “Call of Duty” franchise, which plans to release its highly anticipated “Modern Warfare 3” just two weeks after BF3’s launch.

Both BF3 and COD are going to be great games, and both will be worth their $60 retail price. COD provides run and gun mayhem; its addictive multi-player and devastating kill-streaks are sure to win over millions this holiday season. BF3, however, has transcended the FPS genre becoming an all arms tactical war simulator. Not only is the infantry combat on par with COD, but huge maps, game-play emphasizing teamwork, and brutal vehicle warfare coincide to create a gaming experience that is seriously terrifying.

The two week open beta gave players a chance to see what the true sequel to 2005’s “Battlefield 2” has in store. There was no limit to how high you could rank up and nearly all the fully customizable guns were available though unlocks. The graphics and sound design made you feel as if you were in the battle, and made the fight to stay alive all the more exciting. The new suppression system, which blurs your screen while under fire, only adds to the realism.

However, beta players were limited to only one map, the infantry focused Operation Metro, and players were given no vehicles to roam about in. The beta also lacked squad management, while it overflowed with a profusion of gameplay bugs, all of which are confirmed to be fixed on launch.

Battlefield 3 comes out on October 25th.
